The Los Cabos municipal government sent pothole repair crews to patch roads in San José del Cabo this week, targeting the access road to Los Cabos International Airport along with two residential neighborhoods. The work is part of the city’s ongoing “Cazabaches” program, which deploys Public Works department teams to fill potholes across the municipality.

Airport Road and Two Neighborhoods Get Repairs

Crews focused on the San Bernabé and El Chamizal neighborhoods as well as the road leading to SJD airport, located about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north of downtown San José del Cabo. Workers used both hot and cold asphalt mix to fill damaged sections of pavement.

The airport access road is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Los Cabos. SJD handled roughly 7.5 million passengers in its most recent reporting year, making it the sixth busiest airport in Mexico. Taxis, shuttle vans, rental cars, and private vehicles use the route daily. Potholes on the road can be a particular hazard for unfamiliar drivers navigating to or from the airport after dark.

Day and Night Shifts to Limit Traffic Disruption

The Cazabaches program is running both day and night shifts to reduce the impact on traffic. The name “Cazabaches” is a play on words combining “caza” (hunt) with “baches” (potholes), essentially meaning “pothole hunters.” The municipal government said the program will continue at other locations across Los Cabos.

Pothole damage is a recurring problem in Baja California Sur. Heavy summer rains, construction traffic from the region’s ongoing hotel and residential development, and aging pavement all contribute to road deterioration. Drivers in the area, particularly those in rental cars without full coverage insurance, should remain alert for unrepaired sections on secondary roads.

The Cazabaches repairs were first reported by Colectivo Pericú.
