Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez delivered 30 new patrol vehicles to the municipal police force on June 8 and promised a salary increase for officers as the municipality ramps up its public safety investment following a recent security incident.

The new vehicles were handed over to the Directorate of Public Safety, Preventive Police, and Municipal Transit. Agúndez said administrative procedures to implement the pay raise are already underway, though he did not disclose a specific dollar amount. The raise will also include added benefits aimed at improving working conditions for officers.

Security Upgrades Follow May Incident

The patrol car delivery comes just days after a serious security event shook the region. On the weekend of May 30, a clash between an armed group and Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) prompted the U.S. Embassy in Tijuana to issue a formal alert to Americans. In response, Mayor Agúndez requested an extraordinary session of the Regional Security Council in San José del Cabo to monitor ground operations.

The 30 new patrol cars are part of a broader push to strengthen local policing capacity. Agúndez outlined several planned investments, including expanded video surveillance across the municipality and an upgrade from the current C2 emergency command center to a C4 center. The C4 model integrates command, control, communications, and computing into a single security hub.

Recruitment and Retention Remain Key Challenges

The mayor framed the salary increase and new equipment as necessary steps for retaining capable officers. Los Cabos has been on a steady hiring push, with plans announced earlier this year to add 60 to 70 police officers annually to keep pace with the municipality’s rapid population growth. In December 2025, the city added 50 new officers specifically to boost coverage during the holiday season.

Agúndez also pledged to strengthen the municipal police academy. A more robust training pipeline would support the municipality’s goal of fielding a larger, better-equipped force across both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

The investments come at a critical time for Los Cabos, where tourism growth continues to outpace public safety infrastructure. The municipality depends heavily on its reputation as a safe destination for the millions of visitors who arrive each year.
