The Los Cabos city council has unanimously approved construction of a 250 million peso (roughly $13 million USD) performing arts complex in San José del Cabo. Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez announced the project, called the Centro Cultural Teatro Miguel Lomelí Ceseña, calling it the largest cultural investment in the municipality’s recent history.
The complex will occupy a 26,662-square-meter site in San José del Cabo. Its main theater will seat 1,500 people. The facility will also include arts education classrooms, multidisciplinary forums, community workshop spaces, and a large parking area.
Two-Phase Funding Plan for the Complex
The council approved spending 250 million pesos in two equal phases of 125 million pesos (about $6.5 million USD) each. The first phase will be funded this year. No construction timeline or projected completion date was included in the announcement.
The source article ties the project to the G20, which is being held in Mexico this year, suggesting the theater may be part of Los Cabos’ preparations for international attention. The venue’s programming is planned to serve local audiences year-round, with arts education for children, youth, and community cultural promoters.
A Growing Push for Civic Infrastructure
Los Cabos has had limited dedicated performing arts spaces. The Pabellón Cultural de la República, which opened in 2011, has hosted musical performances, theater productions, school events, and film screenings. But the region has lacked a large, purpose-built theater. An earlier report from Vallarta Daily in September 2025 noted that the proposed cultural center project could put the existing Miguel Lomelí Theater at risk, pointing to a longer planning history behind this announcement.
The new complex would represent a different scale of investment. At 1,500 seats, the main theater would be among the largest performance venues in Baja California Sur. The inclusion of classrooms and workshop spaces points to a facility designed for ongoing programming rather than occasional events.
Los Cabos has also been investing in other civic projects. Late last year, state officials announced plans to spend up to 140 million pesos on upgrades to the historic centers of both San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
