The Los Cabos Women’s Institute (IMMLC) will open applications on April 27 for the second edition of the Distintivo de Igualdad Sustantiva 2026, a certification program that recognizes businesses promoting discrimination-free, gender-equitable workplaces. Officials said this year’s push will focus on expanding participation from the hotel sector, a major employer in the tourist corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
The certification program is part of the municipal government’s broader gender strategy. Businesses that earn the distinction commit to implementing internal policies against workplace discrimination and in favor of equal treatment. The first edition of the award launched in 2025.
New Domestic Violence Support Center in Villa de Cortéz
Alongside the workplace certification, municipal officials announced two concrete expansions to the region’s domestic violence support network. A new UALIVI center will open in Villa de Cortéz, a residential area on the outskirts of San José del Cabo. The center will provide legal aid and emotional support services to people affected by domestic violence.
UALIVI centers are a model used across Mexico to deliver frontline assistance to victims of gender-based violence. The new Villa de Cortéz location will extend coverage to communities that previously had limited access to these services.
Cabo San Lucas Halfway Shelter to Reopen
Officials also confirmed the reactivation of the Casa de Medio Camino, a halfway shelter in Cabo San Lucas. The facility will offer temporary refuge and specialized care for violence victims who need a safe place while transitioning out of dangerous situations. The shelter had been inactive and will now resume operations as part of the expanded municipal support system.
Los Cabos has experienced rapid population growth in recent years, driven by tourism and real estate development. The municipality’s population exceeds 350,000, and service gaps in outlying neighborhoods have been a recurring concern for local government.
The IMMLC said full details of the Distintivo de Igualdad Sustantiva 2026 application process will be published on April 27. Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses in the Los Cabos corridor are eligible to apply. The announcement was reported by the Los Cabos municipal government on its official website.
