The Los Cabos Municipal Sports Institute (INDEM) opened applications for its 2026 Sports Scholarship Program on April 25, backed by an investment of roughly 3 million pesos (about $150,000 USD). The program will fund 90 athlete scholarships and, for the first time, provide one-time stipends to 20 coaches.
INDEM Director General Elton Emmanuel Olachea Arce announced the program, which covers the February through November period. Athletes who qualify will receive retroactive payments for February through May.
Scholarship Tiers and Monthly Amounts
The program splits athlete support into three tiers. Twelve international scholarships pay $4,000 pesos (about $200 USD) per month to athletes who have represented Mexico in competitions abroad. Fifty-five national scholarships pay $3,000 pesos (roughly $150 USD) per month. An additional 23 regional scholarships round out the roster, though the municipality did not specify the monthly amount for that category.
The new coach stipend program awards 20 one-time payments of $20,000 pesos (about $1,000 USD) each. INDEM described the stipends as recognition for coaches’ role in developing athletic talent across San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
Part of a Broader Sports Push
The scholarship announcement follows a larger pattern of sports investment by the current Los Cabos municipal administration. In February 2026, INDEM confirmed a budget increase focused on rehabilitating sports facilities, raising scholarship amounts for high-performance athletes, and funding travel to state and national competitions. Earlier this month, the municipality opened a new 45 million peso sports complex in the Santa Anita neighborhood.
The application window is now open. Interested athletes and coaches in Los Cabos can contact INDEM directly for eligibility requirements and deadlines. The program runs under the XV Municipal Administration’s broader goal of positioning Los Cabos as the sports leader of Baja California Sur.
