The Los Cabos municipal government will hold a free recycling collection event on Thursday, April 24, at the Rodrigo Aragón Ceseña sports complex parking lot in downtown San José del Cabo. The drop-off runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and accepts a wide range of items not collected in regular curbside trash pickup.
What You Can Bring
Accepted materials include expired medications, cardboard, aluminum, plastic, bottle caps, alkaline batteries, household appliances, cigarette butts, paper, glass, electronics, and used cooking oil. These items typically cannot go into standard garbage bins in Los Cabos, making the monthly event one of the few options for proper disposal.
Electronics and batteries are a particular concern in the region. Without dedicated e-waste collection, old phones, laptops, and household batteries often end up in the municipal landfill, where heavy metals can leach into soil and groundwater. Used cooking oil, another accepted item, can contaminate thousands of liters of water if poured down a drain.
Part of a Monthly Program
The event is organized by the city’s Dirección de Ecología y Medio Ambiente (Ecology and Environment Department) as part of a recurring monthly recycling campaign. Los Cabos held a similar drop-off on January 30 at the same sports complex, collecting the same categories of materials.
The Rodrigo Aragón Ceseña complex sits on the west side of downtown San José del Cabo, near the intersection of Calle Coronado and Boulevard Antonio Mijares. Street parking is available in the surrounding area, though the lot itself will be set up for the collection drive.
Recycling Options Remain Limited
Regular recycling infrastructure in Los Cabos is still limited compared to what many residents from the U.S. or Canada are accustomed to. Curbside separation programs exist in some residential communities, including developments in the Cabo Real corridor, but most of the municipality relies on single-stream trash collection. Monthly drop-off events like this one remain the most accessible way to divert hazardous and recyclable materials from the landfill.
No pre-registration is required. Residents can simply drive up during the five-hour window and hand off their items. The event was announced by the Los Cabos municipal government on its official website, loscabos.gob.mx.
