The Baja California Sur State Roads Board (JEC) will begin resurfacing Calle Héroes de Independencia in La Paz on April 23. The project covers the stretch between 5 de Febrero and Manuel Márquez de León in the Zona Centro neighborhood, just blocks from the Mercado Bravo market area.
The repaving job carries a price tag of 2.18 million pesos (roughly $121,000 USD). Funding comes from the FOIS, a federal social infrastructure trust. Work will include removing deteriorated pavement, laying a fresh asphalt surface, releveling utility access covers, and applying new lane markings.
Traffic Disruptions Expected Near Two Schools
Drivers should plan for lane closures and slowdowns along the route while construction is underway. The JEC specifically warned about the proximity of two schools on or near the affected stretch: Escuela Primaria Gregorio Torres Quintero and Jardín de Niños Bonifacio Díaz.
Parents dropping off or picking up children at either school should allow extra travel time. The state agency urged families and teachers to identify alternate routes before work begins on April 23.
Central La Paz Location Means Wide Impact
Héroes de Independencia runs through the heart of La Paz’s Zona Centro, a grid of streets near the malecón and downtown commercial district. The corridor connects to several cross streets that feed into the city’s main north-south arteries. Because of this, detours could ripple across the central grid during peak morning and afternoon hours.
The JEC did not announce a completion date for the project. Road resurfacing jobs of this size in La Paz typically take several weeks, depending on weather and logistics.
