Ensenada’s city government is offering a 25% discount on divorce sentence registration fees throughout May, reducing the cost from 3,167 pesos (about $163 USD) to 2,375.53 pesos (about $122 USD). The promotion saves applicants roughly 791 pesos ($41 USD).
Mayor Claudia Agatón Muñiz announced the discount as an economic relief measure for families. The reduced rate runs from May 5 through May 29 at the Civil Registry Office No. 01 (Oficialía 01 del Registro Civil) in Ensenada.
What the Registration Covers
Divorce sentence registration is a mandatory legal step after a judge grants a divorce in Mexico. Without completing this registration, a person cannot obtain an official divorce certificate (acta de divorcio), which is the document required to remarry in Mexico or complete other legal transactions such as mortgage applications and inheritance proceedings.
Many residents delay this step because of the cost. By lowering the fee, the city hopes to encourage people to finalize their legal status and update the Civil Registry’s records.
Required Documents
To take advantage of the discount, applicants must visit the Oficialía 01 with a completed application filled out in blue ink. They also need to bring the original court order from the family court judge addressed to the Civil Registry and the divorce sentence declaring the case final.
The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can call 646-172-3446 or 646-172-3447 for questions about the process or required paperwork.
Why It Matters for Legal Status
In Baja California, failing to register a divorce sentence can create complications years down the line. Property transactions, new marriage applications, and credit approvals can all stall if an applicant’s civil status remains listed as married in official records. The discount applies only to the registration fee at the Civil Registry and does not cover court costs or attorney fees associated with the divorce itself.
This is not the first time Ensenada has offered promotional rates on civil registry services. Municipal governments across Baja California periodically discount fees for birth certificate corrections, marriage registrations, and other civil documents.
The promotion was first reported by Jornada BC and confirmed by Ensenada Noticias.
