The Baja California Sur state government has committed 25 million pesos (roughly $1.3 million USD) to preventive maintenance and new furniture for public elementary schools across the state. The investment covers more than 500 school properties, including preschool, primary, and secondary campuses, totaling approximately 4,000 classrooms.

Jacobo Quiroga Itúrburu, director of Educational Planning and Evaluation, announced the allocation. Schools are receiving desks, chairs, benches, and whiteboards on a rolling basis, with deliveries prioritized to campuses with the greatest need.

Repairs Target Roofs, Bathrooms, and Water Systems

Beyond furniture, the program funds structural and utility repairs at schools statewide. Work includes fixing bathrooms, sports courts, roofing, water pumps, lighting systems, and septic tanks. These are common pain points at BCS public schools, where desert heat and limited water infrastructure take a toll on aging facilities.

The state government is using a digital platform called RENEC to manage the process. School directors can submit maintenance requests directly through the system, flagging specific needs at their campuses. The platform is designed to replace informal, case-by-case repair requests with a centralized tracking system.

500 Schools, 4,000 Classrooms Statewide

The scope of the program is notable for a state with a relatively small population. Baja California Sur has roughly 800,000 residents spread across five municipalities: La Paz, Los Cabos, Comondú, Mulegé, and Loreto. Reaching more than 500 school properties means the program touches a significant share of the state’s public education infrastructure.

Furniture deliveries are being staggered rather than distributed all at once. The rolling approach allows the education authority to respond to the most urgent cases first while continuing to assess conditions at other campuses through the RENEC platform.

The 25 million peso investment covers both the purchase of new classroom furniture and the labor and materials for physical repairs. State officials have framed the effort as preventive maintenance, aiming to address deterioration before it forces more expensive emergency fixes.
