Los Cabos municipal authorities walked the Marina de Cabo San Lucas boardwalk this week to inspect sanitary and stormwater sewer infrastructure before the rainy season arrives. Crews found grease buildup inside sewer manholes along the marina’s restaurant and shopping corridor, and maintenance is now scheduled to clear the affected lines.
Six agencies took part in the joint inspection. Officials from Public Works, the local water utility OOMSAPAS (Organismo Operador Municipal del Sistema de Agua Potable, Alcantarillado y Saneamiento), the federal port authority ASIPONA (Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional), Civil Protection, the Ecology department, and Fiscal Inspection all participated in the walkthrough.
Grease Blockages Pose Flood and Odor Risk
The grease deposits found in manholes are a common problem near restaurant-heavy areas. When left unchecked, they narrow sewer pipes and can cause backups during heavy rain. In a zone like the marina boardwalk, where dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops sit alongside boat docks and the Puerto Paraiso mall, a sewer failure during a storm would mean street flooding, foul odors, and potential contamination of the harbor.
The marina holds 380 slips and can accommodate vessels up to 200 feet. It draws heavy foot traffic year-round from fishing charters, whale-watching tours, sunset cruises, and cruise ship tenders.
Recent Storm Damage Shows Why Prevention Matters
The preventive approach comes with good reason. In early 2026, a winter storm sent debris and sewage runoff pouring through Cabo’s arroyos and into the bay, forcing authorities to fly black flags at Médano Beach and 8 Cascadas. ZOFEMAT, the federal coastal zone agency, deployed heavy machinery and water-testing crews to restore beach conditions. In October 2025, heavy rains damaged sewer lines across Los Cabos, causing wastewater spills that required emergency cleanup.
Flash flood warnings have already been issued for Los Cabos arroyos this week, making the timing of the marina inspection particularly pointed. The Baja California Sur rainy season typically runs from late June through October, with the most intense storms arriving during hurricane season from August to October.
Cleaning and maintenance of the affected sewer lines along the marina boardwalk are now being scheduled by OOMSAPAS and Public Works. No timeline for completion has been announced.
