The Baja California Sur state government has completed rehabilitation of a desalination plant serving Loreto, shoring up water supply in one of the peninsula’s fastest-growing coastal towns.
The facility processes seawater into usable freshwater. It supplements Loreto’s limited natural water supply, which cannot keep pace with rising demand from residents, retirees, and seasonal tourists. The rehabilitation restores and improves the plant’s capacity to deliver treated water to the community.
Water scarcity is a persistent constraint along the Baja peninsula. Loreto sits on an arid stretch of coastline where groundwater sources are finite. Desalination gives the town a supply line independent of rainfall and underground aquifers. Without it, growth in the hospitality and residential sectors would face hard limits.

OOMSAPAS, the municipal water utility serving Loreto, manages day-to-day distribution from the plant. The state government funded and oversaw the rehabilitation work. Officials have not released a specific capacity figure for the upgraded facility, but the project was described as a critical infrastructure delivery for the region.
Loreto has grown steadily as a retirement and tourism destination, drawing visitors to its colonial center, Sea of Cortez access, and proximity to the Loreto Bay national marine park. That growth increases pressure on water infrastructure. The rehabilitated plant provides a buffer as population and visitor numbers continue to rise.
