Baja California Sur’s Health Secretariat administered 1,771 measles vaccines across Los Cabos on Wednesday, responding to four confirmed measles cases in Cabo San Lucas. Health workers staffed 16 vaccination stations at community centers and commercial plazas throughout the municipality.
The campaign targets residents aged 6 months to 49 years, the groups health officials consider most vulnerable to the highly contagious virus. Health Secretary Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro said the effort aims to break transmission chains before the outbreak spreads further.
Door-to-door health brigades are also canvassing neighborhoods in Cabo San Lucas where the confirmed cases live. Workers visit homes to find residents with incomplete vaccination records and vaccinate them on the spot.
Measles can cause serious complications. The virus can trigger pneumonia and encephalitis, and can leave permanent disabilities including deafness and blindness.
Baja California Sur currently reports measles vaccination coverage above 93% for first doses and 88% for second doses. Health officials say the state needs to reach 95% coverage to stop the virus from circulating. The four Cabo San Lucas cases are part of seven confirmed infections statewide.
If you are in the Los Cabos area and uncertain about your vaccination status, free measles vaccines are available at community health centers and at staffed stations in commercial plazas. Guluarte Castro urged anyone with an incomplete vaccine record to seek a shot without delay. No appointment is required at the plaza stations.
Health brigades will continue door-to-door outreach in affected Cabo San Lucas neighborhoods while plaza vaccination stations remain open. The Secretariat has not announced an end date for the campaign.
