Baja California Sur’s health secretary confirmed three new measles cases in Comondú municipality, bringing the growing cluster in the remote agricultural region to at least six cases, according to Zeta Tijuana.

Among the newly confirmed patients are a 28-year-old woman and her 30-year-old partner, both now in quarantine. Health authorities identified the cases through epidemiological surveillance protocols already in place from earlier infections in the area. A third case was also confirmed, though details on that patient were not immediately released.

Comondú, which includes the towns of Ciudad Constitución and Loreto along the Transpeninsular Highway, sits roughly 200 miles north of La Paz. Ciudad Constitución is the municipality’s largest population center, a common stopping point for drivers heading between La Paz and points north. The area is also home to a sizable farming workforce.

Measles had been largely eliminated in Mexico for years, making this cluster unusual. The outbreak comes as measles cases surge across the Americas. The WHO reported 2,318 confirmed cases across six countries in the region as of April 2025, an 11-fold increase over the prior year. The U.S. has seen over 1,300 confirmed cases in its own ongoing outbreak.

The disease is highly contagious and spreads through airborne droplets. Symptoms typically appear 10 to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic rash. Adults who received only one dose of the MMR vaccine, or who were vaccinated before 1989 under older protocols, may have incomplete protection.

English-speaking residents and travelers in the Comondú area should confirm their vaccination status. Mexico’s public health clinics (centros de salud) offer the MMR vaccine at no cost. Private clinics in La Paz and Los Cabos also carry it. BCS health authorities said they are continuing active surveillance and contact tracing in the municipality.
