A new immersive drone experience called “Tijuana Vuela” is now open on Avenida Revolución, giving visitors a bird’s-eye virtual tour of the city’s historic downtown. The 45-day activation, produced by the creative group Xah, runs throughout July and into the first week of August 2026.
Participants wear virtual reality headsets to watch live drone footage as the aircraft flies along the full length of Avenida Revolución. The experience includes narration about Tijuana’s history, read by veteran broadcaster Nelly Sanoja Melgar.
Seven Million Pesos in City Funding
The Tijuana city government, under Mayor Abdiel Gutiérrez, allocated seven million pesos (roughly $350,000 USD) to the project through its Fondos Tijuana grant program. Council president Ismael Burgueño approved the funding, which covers equipment acquisition, installation, and 45 consecutive days of operation on the avenue.
Juan Carlos Cháidez, the project coordinator, told Semanario ZETA that the goal is to offer residents and tourists “a unique, immersive experience where they can see, through virtual reality glasses, the flight of a drone that takes them along all of Avenida Revolución while we tell them a bit of the city’s history.” Cháidez, who has previous government experience from administrations under the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), described the project as educational, cultural, and entertaining.
What Visitors Should Know
The installation is located directly on Avenida Revolución, the main pedestrian and commercial corridor in Tijuana’s Zona Centro. The avenue sits roughly a 10-minute walk south of the San Ysidro border crossing, making it one of the most accessible attractions for day-trippers from San Diego County.
Avenida Revolución, commonly called “La Revu,” has long served as Tijuana’s principal tourist destination. In recent years, the street has added galleries, craft breweries, and food halls alongside its traditional curio shops and pharmacies. The drone tour adds a tech-focused draw during what is typically a slower summer tourism season along the border.
