The Los Cabos municipal government announced free parking for the 2026 San José del Cabo Traditional Festivals, beginning March 19. Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez, who leads the festival organizing committee, said the decision aims to ease access and reduce congestion during the town’s biggest annual celebration.
Over 3,500 Spaces at DIF-Operated Lot
The municipal DIF (Mexico’s family services agency) operates the designated parking area, which has capacity for more than 3,500 vehicles. In past years, parking logistics created bottlenecks in the historic center of San José del Cabo, where narrow colonial streets were not designed for heavy traffic. The free parking will remain available throughout the duration of the festival.
The Fiestas Tradicionales de San José del Cabo honor the town’s patron saint, Saint Joseph, whose feast day falls on March 19. The celebration typically runs for about a week and transforms the area around the main plaza and the Misión de San José del Cabo church into a sprawling community event. Nightly concerts, cultural performances, a cabalgata (horse parade from surrounding ranch communities), carnival rides, and dozens of street food vendors draw thousands of locals and visitors each evening.
Traffic and Access Tips for the Historic Center
Traffic around the historic center becomes especially heavy after sundown, when the main concerts and fireworks begin. Online travel forums have noted that arriving earlier in the evening, before the headlining acts start, makes it easier to explore food stalls and artisan stands without large crowds. The designated parking lot is intended to keep cars away from the central blocks, allowing pedestrians to move more freely between the plaza and surrounding streets.
San José del Cabo sits about 20 miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas along the Transpeninsular Highway. The town’s historic center, centered on Boulevard Antonio Mijares and the adjacent plaza, is the focal point of the festival. Visitors driving from Cabo San Lucas should expect delays on the highway corridor during peak evening hours.
The festival is one of the oldest annual traditions in Los Cabos, predating the region’s tourism boom by decades. Free parking will be available each day of the event starting March 19, according to BCS Noticias.
