The Centro Estatal de las Artes, known as Ceart, in Playas de Rosarito will host a five-day Mexican opera symposium starting Wednesday, March 18. The event is free and open to the public.
Now in its third year, the Laboratory for the Development of Performing Arts runs through Sunday, March 22. This edition focuses entirely on Mexican opera, from its pre-Hispanic roots to contemporary performers.
Free lectures run Tuesday through Saturday, March 18-21, from 10 a.m. to noon in Ceart’s multipurpose hall. Each session covers a different period. Wednesday opens with pre-Hispanic and colonial-era antecedents. Thursday examines 19th-century opera. Friday covers institutional opera in the 20th and 21st centuries. Saturday’s lecture focuses on Mexican singers.
Four specialists lead the programming: Enid Negrete, Rocío Tamez, Antonio Espinal, and Carlos Conde. Marco Nuño, Ceart’s cultural coordinator, says the event brings together specialists, performers, and interested members of the public.
Two ticketed performances close out the week at the Galería Internacional. A Gala de Ópera Mexicana, a showcase concert featuring Mexican opera, runs Saturday, March 21 at 7 p.m. A closing concert follows Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
Ceart sits in the heart of Playas de Rosarito and serves as the state government’s main arts venue for the city. The center hosts lectures, exhibitions, and performances year-round. The opera symposium is among its highest-profile annual events.
For English-speaking residents and visitors in the Rosarito corridor, the free weekday lectures offer a low-barrier entry point into Mexico’s classical music tradition. No prior knowledge of opera is required. Spanish-language instruction is the norm, but the subject matter translates across language lines.
Ceart Playas de Rosarito is located on Boulevard Benito Juárez. Admission to all lectures is free. For more information, contact Ceart directly or visit the venue in person.
