The Los Cabos municipal government will restrict beach access at Playa Monumentos in Cabo San Lucas this Saturday, July 5, for an open water swimming competition that will bring hundreds of athletes to the shoreline before dawn.
The Aquathompson de Aquamigos event runs from 6:00 to 8:30 a.m. at the beach in front of the Hotel Thompson. The Cabo San Lucas delegation of the municipal government coordinated a multi-agency planning session this week to assign responsibilities for safety, traffic control, and participant support.
Multiple Agencies Will Patrol the Beach and Roads
Representatives from Civil Protection, Public Safety, Fiscal Inspection, Ecology, and INDEM (the municipal sports institute) participated in the coordination meeting. Each agency defined its role for the event. Civil Protection and Public Safety will handle surveillance and emergency response. Fiscal Inspection will oversee vendor compliance in the area.
The Ecology department will monitor environmental conditions along the beachfront. INDEM is managing athlete logistics and event coordination on the sand and in the water.
What Visitors Near Playa Monumentos Should Know
Playa Monumentos sits on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, a stretch of coastline known for strong currents and rough surf outside of organized events. The beach is not typically recommended for casual swimming due to powerful undertows common on Pacific-facing shores in Los Cabos.
Visitors and tourists staying near Playa Monumentos should expect limited beach access during the event window. Road activity in the surrounding area will increase in the early morning hours as athletes arrive and equipment is set up. The municipal government advises planning alternate routes if traveling through the zone between 5:30 and 9:00 a.m.
The event wraps up by 8:30 a.m., so normal beach access should resume before mid-morning. Swimmers who prefer calmer waters can head to Médano Beach, Chileno Bay, or Santa María Bay, all on the Sea of Cortez side, where conditions are generally safer for recreational use.
