Matisse, the pop trio from Mexicali, appears on Mexican superstar Thalía’s new album “Todo suena mejor en cumbia,” which dropped on April 17. The Baja California band contributed to the track “Me fui queriéndote,” a cumbia-style breakup song on the nine-track record.
The collaboration pairs one of Mexico’s most recognized pop icons with a group that got its start in Mexicali just over a decade ago. Matisse members Melissa Robles, Pablo Preciado, and Román Torres formed the band in 2014 after Preciado and Torres spotted a painting by Henri Matisse in the recording studio of singer-songwriter Leonel García. Robles joined shortly after, and the trio signed with Sony Music Latin.
From Mexicali to the National Stage
Since their debut single “La misma luna” in August 2014, Matisse has released six studio albums: “Sube” (2015), “Por tu bien” (2017), “Tres” (2020), “Así de Enamorados” (2020), “De norte a sur” (2022), and “Bella Nostalgia” (2024). The group earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2015.
Their track record includes collaborations with major Latin artists. Matisse worked with Ha*Ash, Reik, Colombian singer Camilo, and Cristian Castro before landing the Thalía feature. In 2024, the band completed the Bella Nostalgia international tour for their tenth anniversary, with shows in Mexico, the United States, Peru, and Guatemala. They have performed at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City and at the Tecate Pa’l Norte festival.
Thalía’s Cumbia Reinvention
For Thalía, the album represents a reimagining of familiar material through the lens of cumbia. “This album is very special because it allowed me to embrace my memories and emotions from a different place, as the woman I am today,” Thalía said in a statement. The record also features Culiacán corridos group Grupo Maximo Grado and legendary pop singer Yuri, along with a bilingual reworking of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.”
The Thalía collaboration arrives as Matisse promotes their latest project, “El ayer,” which includes the singles “Hipotéticamente” with Leonel García and “Conmigo sin ti” with Cristian Castro. The album is available on all major streaming platforms.
