Tourism officials in Los Cabos are negotiating with Viva Aerobus to launch a nonstop flight between Los Cabos International Airport and Cancun, aiming to use the Caribbean hub as a gateway for European travelers visiting Mexico on multi-destination vacations.
The proposal emerged at the 2026 Advisory Commission meeting for Los Cabos International Airport. Francisco Villaseñor, the airport director for GAP (Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, the company that operates the airport), said Cancun’s dense network of international connections makes it a natural feeder hub for Los Cabos.
Viva Aerobus Route Could Drop Toluca Stop
Rodrigo Esponda, director of Fiturca (the Los Cabos Tourism Trust), confirmed that his agency is in active talks with Viva Aerobus to convert its existing Los Cabos to Cancun service into a true nonstop. The budget carrier launched the route in 2023, but the flight currently requires a stopover in Toluca, a city about 40 miles west of Mexico City.
The goal is at least one direct weekly flight. As of May 2026, no airline offers a nonstop connection between the two airports, according to Skyscanner data. One-stop fares currently start around $110 round trip.
Strong Demand Already on the Books
Data from Fiturca shows the existing Viva Aerobus route posts occupancy rates above 80%. Roughly half of passengers on that route continue on to Los Cabos, pointing to real demand for the connection. Viva currently offers the cheapest tickets on the corridor.
The logic behind the push is straightforward. Cancun receives direct flights from cities across Europe, including London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. European visitors to Mexico tend to stay 10 to 11 days and often visit multiple destinations. A nonstop link between Cancun and Los Cabos would let those travelers add Baja California Sur to a Caribbean itinerary without a complicated layover.
Los Cabos Builds Its Route Network
Los Cabos International Airport currently serves 28 U.S. destinations, 13 domestic Mexican routes, and nine Canadian cities. The resort also has seasonal service to Frankfurt, Germany, via Condor, and a route to Panama. Southwest Airlines announced a new direct Las Vegas to Los Cabos route earlier in May 2026 as part of its international expansion.
A nonstop Cancun link would mark the first step in what officials describe as a two-resort itinerary strategy. The idea is to position Los Cabos and Cancun as complementary destinations: Caribbean beaches on one side, Pacific desert coastline on the other.
