La Paz’s 2nd Encuentro de Coros (Choral Gathering) opens Wednesday, May 28, at the historic Teatro Juárez in the city’s Zona Central. The three-day festival runs through May 30, and all events are free to the public.
More than 150 singers are expected to participate in the event, which the municipal government organized to promote choral music across Baja California Sur. Juan Lara Guzmán, La Paz’s municipal director of culture, said the festival aims to “open spaces for artistic outreach” in the city.
Three Days of Workshops and Concerts
Wednesday’s schedule includes a choral workshop and a talk on opera. Renowned Mexican opera singer and choral director Jesús Lujambio will lead several activities over the course of the festival. Maestro Jorge Córdoba will also conduct a masterclass for participants.
On Thursday evening, the Vocal Octet of the State of Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture takes the stage as the featured guest ensemble. The group is traveling from central Mexico specifically for the La Paz event.
The marquee event is the closing concert on Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. All participating choirs will perform together in a combined finale at Teatro Juárez.
A Historic Venue in Downtown La Paz
Teatro Juárez sits at Belisario Domínguez 448 in the Zona Central, a short walk from the malecón. The Italian-style theater holds 289 seats and has served as one of La Paz’s primary cultural venues for decades. La Paz Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero has made reactivating the theater as a community cultural hub a priority for her administration.
The mayor also announced that the traditional Festival de Pescadores will return on June 1 along the malecón, giving La Paz residents another free public event on the calendar next week.
No tickets or reservations are required for any of the choral festival events. Doors open before each scheduled performance.
