The Ironman 70.3 triathlon returns to Los Cabos on Sunday, April 26, after a three-year absence from the region’s sports calendar. About 1,360 athletes from 40 countries will race across a 113-kilometer course that spans Playa Palmilla, the Tourist Corridor, and the streets of San José del Cabo.
Municipal officials finalized the event’s operational plan at a coordination meeting on April 22. Alberto Rentería Santana, the municipal secretary of Los Cabos, led the session, which covered security, traffic management, and logistics for race day.
Race Course and Road Closures
The course follows the standard Ironman 70.3 format: a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike leg, and a 21.1-kilometer run. Swimmers will enter the water at Playa Palmilla just after sunrise. The bike segment follows the Transpeninsular Highway through the Tourist Corridor, the main road connecting San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. The run finishes in downtown San José del Cabo.
Sections of the Transpeninsular Highway will operate with restricted lanes or controlled crossings during the bike segment, particularly in the morning hours. Travel between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo will take longer than usual, and route changes may come with little notice. The Playa Palmilla parking lot has been closed since April 21 to accommodate event setup.
Economic Impact and History
The race was held in Los Cabos for several consecutive years before its three-year hiatus. Previous editions drew thousands of athletes and spectators, generating significant revenue for hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. Early estimates placed registration at up to 1,800 athletes when the event was first announced in January 2026. The final confirmed count is 1,360.
Professional athletes will compete for a prize purse of $25,000 USD. The race also serves as a qualifying event for the Ironman World Championships, adding stakes for competitive triathletes in the field.
City officials have asked residents and visitors for patience with Sunday’s disruptions, noting the economic boost the event brings to the municipality. Spectators are encouraged to line the run course through San José del Cabo to cheer on competitors.
