Five track cyclists from Baja California Sur will represent Mexico at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Baja California Sur Sports Institute (INSUDE) confirmed the squad, which includes two Olympians and three rising talents from the state capital of La Paz.
The team features Olympians Yuli Paola Verdugo Osuna and Ricardo Peña Salas, along with Sebastián Ruiz Terán, Andrea Robles Félix, and Edgar Verdugo Osuna. All five will compete in track cycling events at the regional multi-sport competition.
Peña Arrives in Top Form After Trinidad Results
Ricardo Peña Salas heads to Santo Domingo on a hot streak. He recently competed at the Trinidad and Tobago Track Cycling Championships, where he placed first in the elimination race and fourth in scratch during the Speed Paradise Grand Prix.
At the Carnival of Speed Grand Prix, also held in Trinidad, Peña took first place in both elimination and scratch events. He also finished second in the omnium, a multi-discipline endurance format.
Sebastián Ruiz Terán will join Peña on Mexico’s team pursuit squad alongside national-level riders Ignacio de Jesús Prado and Ulises Castillo. The pursuit pits two teams starting on opposite sides of a velodrome, with the faster time winning if neither team catches the other.
Robles and Edgar Verdugo Round Out the Squad
Andrea Robles Félix earned her spot after winning two gold medals at Mexico’s 2026 National Olympics (Olimpiada Nacional), the country’s premier domestic competition for developing athletes. Edgar Verdugo Osuna will race in keirin and pursuit events, competing in both individual and team formats.
In keirin, riders follow a motorized pacing bike before launching into an all-out sprint. The first cyclist across the line wins, but positioning and strategy matter as much as raw speed.
La Paz has long been a pipeline for elite Mexican cyclists. INSUDE provides training support and development programs for athletes across the state, and the five selections for Santo Domingo 2026 are the latest product of that investment. Yuli Paola Verdugo Osuna, the most decorated member of the group, brings Olympic experience to a squad that blends veteran talent with younger competitors.
The Central American and Caribbean Games are the oldest regional multi-sport event in the world, first held in 1926. The cycling events in Santo Domingo will take place on the velodrome track. Originally reported by Círculo Político BCS and the Baja California Sur state government.
