Los Cabos will host its first open water swimming competition at Médano Beach on Saturday, June 6, with three races kicking off at 6 a.m. in Cabo San Lucas Bay. Registration for the event has already sold out.

The competition, titled “A Challenge Between Two Seas,” was organized by the local chapter of CROC (the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants), the Open Water Médano Swimming School, and Green Bottle. All three races will start and finish in front of Hacienda Beach Club & Residences on Médano Beach.

Three Distances, Prize Money for the Featured Race

The morning begins with a 1,000-meter race, followed by a 2,000-meter (1.24-mile) event. The featured race covers 4,000 meters, roughly 2.5 miles, through the bay’s calm waters.

Prize money for the 4,000-meter race stands at 8,000 pesos (about $460 USD) for first place, 5,000 pesos (about $285 USD) for second, and 2,000 pesos (about $115 USD) for third. No prize details have been announced for the shorter distances.

A New Athletic Event for the Bay

Médano Beach is the only swimmable beach in central Cabo San Lucas, known for its protected location inside the bay. While the Pacific side of the cape is too rough for most water activities, the bay’s relatively flat conditions make it a natural venue for open water racing.

Los Cabos has a history of hosting longer open water events. The Los Cabos Open Water Acuarium Swim, a 32-kilometer marathon route from Puerto Los Cabos to Médano Beach, has drawn elite swimmers since 2019. Saturday’s competition is the first organized race of its kind at Médano itself, offering shorter distances accessible to a broader range of athletes.

Organizers said the event combines sports with community engagement and environmental awareness, though specific environmental programming details were not released.

Spectators Welcome

Although swimmer registration closed before the event was publicly announced, spectators can watch from the beach starting at 6 a.m. Médano Beach is accessible on foot from downtown Cabo San Lucas or by water taxi from the marina. Early arrival is recommended, as the races begin at sunrise.

The event was first reported by the Gringo Gazette.
