Ensenada will host two major national science conferences in October 2026, bringing roughly 1,700 researchers and academics to the Baja California port city for nearly a week.
Mayor Claudia Agatón Muñiz confirmed the events after meeting with Dr. Oracio Navarro Chávez, president of the Sociedad Mexicana de Física (Mexican Physics Society). The city will serve as the venue for the 69th National Physics Congress and the 41st National Science Outreach Meeting, scheduled to run from October 11 through 16.
1,700 Researchers Expected
The Physics Congress alone is expected to draw approximately 1,700 researchers, academics, and specialists from across Mexico. The parallel science outreach meeting will add to that total, making Ensenada the country’s primary scientific gathering point for the week.
The dual event is a natural fit for Ensenada, which is home to CICESE (Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada), one of Mexico’s leading public research centers. CICESE specializes in Earth sciences, oceanography, and applied physics, and has operated in Ensenada since 1973. The city also hosts the National Astronomical Observatory in the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, about 100 kilometers to the southeast.
Mid-October Hotel Demand Likely to Rise
The influx of nearly 2,000 conference attendees during the October 11 to 16 window could tighten hotel availability in Ensenada, particularly along the waterfront and in the Zona Centro. Mid-October typically falls between the peak summer tourist season and the slower winter months, so the conferences will provide an off-peak economic boost to hotels, restaurants, and transportation services.
Ensenada sits about 80 miles south of the Tijuana border crossing on the Carretera Transpeninsular (Highway 1). The city is a regular cruise ship port and a popular weekend destination for Southern California day-trippers.
The science outreach meeting may also include public programming aimed at the general community, though specific activities have not yet been announced. Previous editions of the event have featured public lectures, student workshops, and interactive science exhibits.
