A wave of concerts and sporting events pushed Ensenada hotel occupancy to 85% last weekend, with the upcoming Baja 500 off-road race expected to keep rooms tight through the first week of June.
Ensenada Mayor Claudia Agatón Muñiz announced the figures, citing data from Proturismo de Ensenada, the city’s tourism promotion agency. A Friday night concert by Mexican regional star Julión Álvarez at Arena Valle de Guadalupe drove much of the surge. Urban Ensenada hotels averaged 85% occupancy, while the Valle de Guadalupe wine corridor reached 82%.
The Valle de Guadalupe itself saw occupancy climb from 75% on Friday to 89% by Saturday, as concertgoers combined the show with weekend wine tasting along the valley’s roughly 150 wineries and restaurants located about 20 miles northeast of downtown Ensenada.
Baja 500 Looms as Next Major Draw
The 58th SCORE Baja 500, one of the world’s most famous off-road desert races, is scheduled for June 3 through 7 in and around Ensenada. The race historically fills hotels across the city and surrounding areas, drawing thousands of racers, support crews, and spectators from the United States and beyond.
The back-to-back events create what amounts to a 10-day stretch of elevated demand for rooms. Visitors crossing the border from San Diego, roughly 80 miles to the north, will find limited last-minute availability in both the city center and the Valle de Guadalupe corridor.
Strong Memorial Day Numbers Set the Stage
The occupancy spike follows an already strong Memorial Day weekend. Agatón reported that Ensenada reached 90% hotel occupancy over that holiday period, with visitors arriving from the United States, Colombia, Spain, and France. The consecutive high-occupancy weekends mark a strong start to summer tourism season for the port city.
The Valle de Guadalupe has become an increasingly important economic engine for the region. Once known primarily to local wine enthusiasts, the valley now attracts international tourists year-round and serves as a venue for large-scale concerts and food festivals that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.
For those still planning to visit Ensenada during the Baja 500 window, options remain more available in areas outside the immediate city center, including along the Ensenada-to-La Bufadora coastal road and in nearby San Antonio de las Minas.
