About 1,000 cyclists from five countries will roll out of Valle de Guadalupe at 5 a.m. on May 24 for the Desafio Ensenada cycling race, a 92.5-kilometer circuit through Baja’s wine country that organizers say will generate 38 million pesos (roughly $1.9 million USD) in local economic activity. The event is officially licensed by La Vuelta a España, one of professional cycling’s three Grand Tours alongside the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia.

But this is not just a race. The three-day weekend, running May 22 through 24, is built around Valle de Guadalupe’s wineries, restaurants, and hotels. For riders and spectators alike, the Desafio Ensenada functions as a sports-tourism package in a valley that has spent the last decade building its international reputation.

La Vuelta Brand Arrives in Baja Wine Country

The Desafio (“Challenge”) format is a mass-participation ride licensed by Unipublic, the Spanish company that organizes La Vuelta a España. Desafio events have taken place in cities across Latin America and Spain, giving amateur cyclists a chance to ride courses branded by a Grand Tour. Omar García, sports director of Desafío México, confirmed at a May 18 press conference that the Ensenada edition carries full backing from the Spanish organizers.

The route starts at Finca Mirador del Valle, a vineyard property in the heart of Valle de Guadalupe. Riders head northwest to El Sauzal on the Pacific coast, then south through El Tigre and inland to La Misión. From there, the course turns east through El Porvenir before looping back to the start. All participants must maintain a minimum speed of 21 kilometers per hour (about 13 mph). Those who fall below that pace will be pulled from the course by a sweep vehicle.

Riders from Mexico, the United States, Colombia, Spain, and France have registered. The race can be entered solo or in pairs. Registration remains open at asdeporte.com, starting at 2,249 pesos (about $113 USD), with same-day signup also available at the venue.

Valle de Guadalupe Has Hosted Growing Sports Events Since 2018

Valle de Guadalupe, located about 30 kilometers northeast of Ensenada along the Ruta del Vino, is home to more than 150 wineries and dozens of restaurants. The valley produces roughly 90% of Mexico’s wine. Over the past several years, local and state officials have worked to extend the tourism calendar beyond the peak summer wine season by attracting sporting events.

Trail runs, gravel rides, and cycling tours have become regular fixtures. The valley’s rolling terrain, mild spring temperatures, and scenic vineyard roads make it a natural fit for endurance events. Ensenada Mayor Claudia Agatón said at the press conference that the Desafio race is part of a broader municipal strategy to position Ensenada as an international sports tourism destination. She cited local professional cyclist Isaac del Toro, who rides for the UAE Team Emirates WorldTour squad, as an inspiration for youth cycling programs in the region.

Desafío México also donated 350,000 pesos (about $17,500 USD) to the Ensenada municipal government for sports infrastructure development.

Road Closures and a Wine-Country Weekend for Non-Riders

Partial road closures will be in effect along the 92.5-kilometer route as the peloton passes. Organizers have not published a detailed closure schedule, but the race starts at 5 a.m. and the route passes through El Sauzal, El Tigre, La Misión, and El Porvenir. Drivers heading to or from Valle de Guadalupe on the morning of May 24 should expect delays, particularly on the Carretera Tecate-Ensenada (Highway 3) and the roads connecting La Misión to El Porvenir.

Spectators can watch from activation points along the route. Organizers confirmed that brand activations and viewing areas will be set up at El Tigre, roughly at the midpoint of the course.

The weekend begins before the race itself. Most riders and visitors are expected to arrive by May 22. On May 23, the official kit pickup takes place at Finca Mirador del Valle, paired with wine tastings, regional food, and a social gathering. For non-riders, that Friday event offers a chance to experience the weekend’s atmosphere without clipping into pedals. The valley’s tasting rooms and restaurants will be open as usual, though reservations at popular spots like Fauna, Deckman’s, and Finca Altozano are likely to fill quickly with the influx of visitors.

Rodrigo García Carrillo, marketing director for Desafío México, described the event as a platform for both sport and tourism. “It’s not just a sporting event,” he said. “It’s a platform for tourism, economic, and community promotion for Ensenada and especially for Valle de Guadalupe.”

The race finishes back at Finca Mirador del Valle on the morning of May 24. Organizers expect most riders to complete the course by late morning. Details on registration and the full route map are available at asdeporte.com. This story was first reported by La Jornada Baja California.
