Baja California Sur earned six nominations in the 2026 Lo Mejor de México awards, a national program run by México Desconocido magazine that ranks the country’s top tourism destinations. State tourism secretary Maribel Collins announced the nominations and called on residents to vote online at lomejormexico.com before April 20.
Six Categories Span the Peninsula
The nominations cover destinations from the Pacific coast to the Sea of Cortez. Playa Cerritos, the popular surf beach about 40 miles north of Cabo San Lucas near Todos Santos, is nominated for best beach to discover. Todos Santos itself, a Pueblo Mágico since 2006, earned a nod for best magical town for weddings.
Loreto, the historic mission town roughly 220 miles north of La Paz on the Transpeninsular Highway, is nominated in the luxury wellness experience category. Guerrero Negro, the salt-mining town near the Baja California border known as a gateway to the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, competes for the hidden gem designation.
Two experience-based categories round out the list. Whale watching and the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas are nominated for best must-do experience. The Baja 1000, the legendary off-road race that has drawn international competitors to the peninsula since 1967, is nominated for best sporting event.
Winners Announced April 29 in Acapulco
México Desconocido organizes the awards in collaboration with Mexico’s federal Secretariat of Tourism. Voting is open to the public at lomejormexico.com and closes April 20. Winners will be announced April 29 at the Tianguis Turístico, Mexico’s largest annual tourism trade fair, held this year in Acapulco.
The awards program uses public voting to determine winners in each category. Baja California (the northern state) also received six nominations in the same program for 2025, so the recognition follows a pattern across both Baja states.
Collins said the nominations strengthen the state’s positioning at the national and international level. The results will be formally presented at the Tianguis Turístico on April 29, according to the Baja California Sur state government.
