Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda swore in a new cohort of young Guardianes del Medio Ambiente (Environmental Guardians) in San Quintín on June 5, World Environment Day. The ceremony took place during the opening of Expo Ambiente 2026, an event featuring workshops and civic engagement activities aimed at young people across the region.
The youth guardians will lead community awareness campaigns, environmental education efforts, and sustainable practices in their local communities. San Quintín, located about 190 miles south of Tijuana along the Pacific coast, is known for its beaches, volcanic formations, and large-scale agricultural operations producing strawberries, tomatoes, and other crops.
Environmental Programs Tied to San Quintín Justice Plan
The event also spotlighted ongoing environmental initiatives under the Plan de Justicia para San Quintín, a comprehensive government program for the region. Those initiatives include a battery recycling drive, a community recycling program, and organized beach cleanups along San Quintín’s coastline.
The justice plan, announced earlier this year in coordination with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, covers communities from Camalú and Vicente Guerrero south through El Rosario, Bahía de los Ángeles, and Isla de Cedros. It includes major infrastructure investments, among them a new desalination plant and expanded water distribution networks worth more than 1.578 billion pesos (roughly $79 million USD).
First Woman Sworn In to Lead BC Agricultural Council
Governor Marina del Pilar also used the occasion to swear in Mathilde Rivera Trujillo as the first woman to lead the Baja California Agricultural Council. The appointment is notable in a state where agriculture is a dominant economic force, particularly in the San Quintín Valley, one of Mexico’s most productive farming corridors.
Expo Ambiente 2026 continues with workshops focused on sustainability and youth civic participation. The Environmental Guardians program is part of the state government’s broader push to involve young residents in protecting the coastal ecosystems, farmland, and natural reserves that define the region.
