Two of Mexico’s most recognized pop icons, Angélica María and Enrique Guzmán, performed in Tijuana as part of their joint farewell tour, “La Despedida.” The show brought together two artists who first met more than 60 years ago as teenagers breaking into the Mexican entertainment industry. Both have announced this tour as their final run of shared performances.

Angélica María and Enrique Guzmán Rose to Fame in Mexico’s 1960s Pop Explosion

Angélica María Hartman Ortiz, born in 1944 in New Orleans to a Mexican mother and an American father, began performing as a child actress in Mexican cinema during the 1950s. By the early 1960s she had become one of the country’s biggest pop singers, earning the title “La Novia de México” (Mexico’s Sweetheart). Her career spans more than 75 films, dozens of telenovelas, and hit songs like “Eddy Eddy” and “Tonto Corazón.” She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016, one of a small number of Mexican artists to earn that recognition.

Enrique Guzmán Vargas, born in 1943, rose to fame as the lead singer of Los Teen Tops, a rock and roll group that helped introduce rock music to Mexican audiences in the late 1950s. The band covered American hits in Spanish, and their version of “La Plaga” (adapted from Little Richard’s “Good Golly Miss Molly”) became a massive hit across Latin America. Guzmán launched a solo career in the early 1960s and earned the nickname “El Ídolo de la Juventud” (The Idol of Youth). He was also briefly married to singer Silvia Pinal’s daughter, the late Alejandra Guzmán’s mother.

The two artists have been friends since those early years of Mexican rock and pop, when a generation of young performers transformed the country’s music scene. Their friendship has outlasted marriages, career shifts, and decades of change in the Mexican entertainment industry. Both are now in their early eighties.

Tijuana Has Long Served as a Key Stop for Mexican Concert Tours

Tijuana’s location on the U.S. border makes it a natural stop for touring Mexican artists. The city draws audiences from both sides of the border, including Mexican Americans from San Diego County and Southern California who cross south for concerts. Major venues like the Auditorio Fausto Gutiérrez Moreno and the Centro de Espectáculos El Fórum regularly host national touring acts.

For the “La Despedida” tour, the Tijuana stop carried particular weight. Both Angélica María and Enrique Guzmán have performed in the city many times over their careers. Tijuana’s cultural ties to both Mexico City’s entertainment industry and the broader U.S. Latino audience made it a logical choice for a farewell tour that aims to reach fans across the country.

The show featured a mix of each artist’s solo hits and romantic classics from the era when both were at their commercial peak. Audience members at these farewell performances have ranged from longtime fans in their seventies and eighties to younger generations familiar with the artists through family and telenovela reruns.

“La Despedida” Tour Dates Stretch Across Mexico Through 2026

The farewell tour has visited multiple Mexican cities, though neither artist has confirmed a firm final date. Farewell tours in the Mexican entertainment world often extend over long periods. Both Angélica María and Enrique Guzmán have remained active performers well into their eighties, a rarity in an industry that tends to cycle through generations quickly.

Angélica María has spoken publicly about wanting to close her touring career on her own terms. In interviews over the past year, she described the joint tour as a celebration rather than a somber goodbye. Guzmán has echoed that tone, framing the performances as a chance to revisit six decades of shared history on stage.

The practical reality for anyone hoping to catch a remaining show: tickets for “La Despedida” have sold briskly at most stops. Venues have varied in size from mid-capacity theaters to larger arenas. Specific upcoming dates and cities have not been published on a single centralized schedule, so checking local venue listings or Ticketmaster Mexico remains the most reliable way to find remaining performances.

The Tijuana concert took place in April 2026. Additional stops across northern Mexico may follow in coming months, though neither artist has confirmed dates publicly. This story was first reported by Zeta Tijuana.
