The San José del Cabo Fire Department hosted 120 children at its second annual Junior Firefighter Fair, a free hands-on event teaching fire safety and emergency skills to kids ages 6 to 12. Fire Commander Omar Barreras Núñez led the program, which was timed to coincide with Mexico’s Children’s Day celebrations.
Participants learned how to properly call 911, practiced basic fire safety techniques, and tried victim drag exercises. The children also completed physical drills designed to mirror real firefighter training in a kid-friendly format.
Donor-Funded Event Draws Waitlist
The fair was funded entirely through donor support and the fire department’s patronato, a nonprofit fundraising board. No public funds were used for the event. Demand exceeded the 120-participant cap this year, forcing organizers to place additional families on a waitlist.
The first edition of the fair was held in 2025. That inaugural event established the format that returned this year: stations run by active-duty firefighters, each focused on a different safety skill. Children rotated through the stations over the course of the day.
Plans to Expand in 2027
Organizers are already planning to grow the event for its third year. The 2027 edition aims to accommodate 200 children, a roughly 67% increase over this year’s capacity. Registration details have not yet been announced, but spots filled quickly in both previous years.
The Junior Firefighter Fair is one of the few free, structured safety education programs available to children in the Los Cabos area. For families in San José del Cabo and nearby communities, the event offers a rare chance for kids to interact directly with first responders and learn practical emergency skills.
