A fire broke out Monday afternoon at a workshop on Calle Ingeniero Fernando Sánchez Ayala in Tijuana’s Zona Norte neighborhood, sending a crew of 10 firefighters to the scene. The city’s Dirección de Bomberos (fire department) confirmed the blaze was contained and brought under control the same day.
The fire was described as “aparatoso,” a Spanish term meaning dramatic or spectacular, by the reporting outlet. The workshop’s exact type of business was not specified, though the area contains a mix of small commercial and industrial operations. No casualties were reported in the initial account, and details on whether the fire spread to neighboring structures were not available.
Location Familiar to Border Crossers
Zona Norte sits in central Tijuana, just south of the San Ysidro border crossing. The neighborhood is one of the most densely built areas of the city, with narrow streets and tightly packed buildings. It is well known to cross-border visitors as the first neighborhood many encounter after walking into Mexico on foot.
The street where the fire occurred, Calle Ingeniero Fernando Sánchez Ayala, runs through the heart of the colonia. Workshops and small businesses line many of these blocks, where older construction and limited setbacks between buildings can make fire containment more challenging.
Tijuana’s Fire Response Stretched Thin
The deployment of 10 firefighters to a single incident is notable for Tijuana, a city of roughly two million people whose fire department has historically operated with limited resources. Past fires at industrial sites in the city have required days to extinguish. In January 2023, a blaze at the Cartonera de Otay cardboard recycling plant burned for nearly a week and sent thick smoke across the U.S. border into San Diego County.
In August 2023, a polyurethane factory fire in Tijuana’s La Mesa area required 65 firefighters from seven stations. Authorities at the time warned residents to avoid the area due to toxic fumes from burning materials.
Monday’s workshop fire appears to have been resolved far more quickly, with the Dirección de Bomberos reporting successful containment within hours. The cause of the blaze has not been disclosed.
