A 20-year-old woman sustained injuries on the night of April 30 after jumping from a moving DiDi rideshare vehicle in Mexicali. She leapt from the car on Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas near Avenida Niños Héroes after the driver deviated from the app’s mapped route and ignored her repeated demands to turn back.

The woman had been riding in a dark gray Nissan Versa with a companion. After the driver dropped off the other passenger, he left the programmed route. When the woman told him to return to the correct road, he refused. He then made unwanted intimate remarks toward her, according to the report.

Passenger Warned Driver Before Jumping

Fearing for her safety, the woman told the driver she would jump from the vehicle if he did not stop. The driver reportedly dared her to do so. She opened the rear door and threw herself onto the boulevard, suffering injuries from the fall.

Bystanders at the scene called 911. Municipal Police, firefighters, and detectives from the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (State Investigation Agency) responded. The Baja California State Attorney General’s office has opened an investigation into the incident.

Echoes of the Paola Bañuelos Case

The incident recalls a far more tragic case from July 2024. Paola Bañuelos Flores, a 23-year-old university student, was found dead in the Islas Agrarias area east of Mexicali after disappearing following a DiDi ride in the early morning hours of July 8. Her driver, Sergio Gutiérrez, turned himself in and was arrested for femicide. That case triggered widespread outrage across Baja California and led to calls for stricter regulation of ride-hailing platforms.

In the months since the Bañuelos case, the Baja California state government integrated DiDi’s in-app emergency button with Mexicali’s C5 command center, a centralized monitoring hub that coordinates police, fire, and emergency medical response. The April 30 incident, however, exposed the limits of that system. The passenger had to physically escape the vehicle to protect herself.

Safety Tips for Rideshare Users

Riders in Mexicali and throughout Baja California can take several steps before and during any app-based trip. The DiDi app allows users to share live trip details with emergency contacts. Security experts recommend screenshotting the driver’s name, photo, license plate, and vehicle information before getting into the car. Riders should also confirm the license plate matches the one displayed in the app.

The investigation remains open with the Baja California State Attorney General’s office. No arrest has been announced in connection with the April 30 incident. The story was first reported by The Baja Post.
