Municipal police discovered the body of a woman with gunshot wounds on a public street near a park in Ejido Hermosillo, in the Valle de Mexicali, on Sunday morning, April 12.
Officers responded to the scene on Calle Miguel Hidalgo shortly after 6:00 a.m. after an emergency call reported a body on the roadway. The woman, estimated to be between 40 and 45 years old, showed signs of violence and multiple bullet impacts, according to reports from multiple Mexicali news outlets.
Few Details on Victim or Suspects
Authorities have not publicly identified the victim. No information about suspects or a possible motive has been released as of Sunday evening. The Ejido Hermosillo area sits in the agricultural Valle de Mexicali, roughly 30 miles southeast of the Mexicali city center and the Calexico border crossing.
The Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state attorney general’s office, is expected to take over the homicide investigation. Municipal police secured the scene and waited for forensic teams to process evidence.
Ongoing Violence in the Mexicali Region
The killing comes during a period of elevated violence in the Mexicali area. Recent weeks have seen a series of cartel-linked incidents in the region, including kidnappings, armed standoffs, and the arrest of a distributor tied to the Los Rusos cartel cell. The Valle de Mexicali’s rural ejido communities have long been affected by organized crime activity linked to drug trafficking routes running north toward the U.S. border.
Ejido Hermosillo is one of dozens of small agricultural settlements scattered across the valley floor east and south of the state capital. The area sees little tourist traffic but is traversed by residents and workers traveling between Mexicali and the broader valley.
The incident was first reported by Semanario Zeta, La Voz de la Frontera, and El Imparcial.
