A woman between 55 and 60 years old was shot and killed inside her home in Tijuana’s Los Lobos subdivision on the afternoon of Friday, July 3. Her two grandchildren, a 15-year-old girl and a younger child, were inside the residence at the time of the attack.

The shooting took place at a house on the corner of Calle Lobo Viejo Oriente and Calle Lobato in the Los Lobos fraccionamiento, a residential housing development in Tijuana. Authorities have not released the victim’s name, a motive, or suspect information.

Shooting in Residential Neighborhood Raises Alarm

Los Lobos is a planned residential subdivision, not a commercial zone or border corridor where violent incidents more commonly occur. The fact that a gunman targeted a woman inside her own home, with minors present, sets this case apart from street-level shootings that make up a large share of Tijuana’s homicide statistics.

The killing adds to a troubling pattern of violence against women in Tijuana. Through the first half of 2024, 18 femicide investigations had been opened in the city, nearly matching the 20 recorded for all of 2023, according to Mexico’s National System of Public Safety. Both Tijuana municipal police and Baja California state police have said they lack the personnel and budget to adequately address the problem.

No Arrests or Motive Released

Investigators from the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the Baja California state attorney general’s office, responded to the scene. As of Saturday, no arrests had been announced. It remains unclear whether the shooting was a targeted attack or connected to broader criminal activity in the area.

Tijuana recorded more than 1,500 homicides in recent full-year counts, making it one of the most violent cities in Mexico. While much of that violence is linked to organized crime, residential shootings like this one are a growing concern for families in the city’s outlying neighborhoods.

The physical condition of the two grandchildren was not detailed in initial reports, but there was no indication they were physically harmed during the attack.
