A water tanker truck overturned Monday morning on the Transpeninsular Highway between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos, killing the male driver at the scene.
Firefighters from the Cabo San Lucas Fire Battalion responded to the crash and found the driver unresponsive inside the overturned vehicle. Emergency crews were unable to revive him. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Road Partially Closed During Response
The rollover forced a partial closure of the highway while emergency crews worked at the scene. The Cabo to Todos Santos stretch of Federal Highway 1 is a two-lane road that winds through hilly desert terrain, with curves and elevation changes that can be challenging for heavy vehicles.
Authorities have not determined the cause of the rollover. Investigators are looking into whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or human error played a role in the crash. The driver’s identity has not been released publicly.
A Known Trouble Spot for Traffic Safety
The roughly 80-kilometer (50-mile) highway segment between Cabo San Lucas and the Pacific Coast town of Todos Santos carries heavy daily traffic. Passenger cars, tour buses, commercial trucks, and water tankers share the road, which lacks shoulders in several sections.
Los Cabos officials have previously flagged rising traffic accident rates in the municipality. Local authorities requested additional Federal National Guard patrols along area highways in recent years after a spike in collisions on the tourist corridor. A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on the same Federal Highway 1 near Cabo San Lucas in a separate, earlier incident.
Drivers traveling the Cabo to Todos Santos route should expect possible delays while cleanup operations continue. The highway is the primary route between the two towns, with no practical alternate road available.
