A Mexicali judge has formally bound over two men to stand trial for the premeditated murder of a man gunned down in broad daylight on March 20, 2025, in the Colonia Venustiano Carranza neighborhood.

The suspects, identified as Germán Eduardo, alias “El Mike Carranza,” and Antonio Eduardo, alias “El Walo,” are accused of opening fire on a victim known as “El Meño” between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. on Avenida D. Both men are now held in preventive detention as the case moves forward.

What the Charges Mean

The Baja California State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) secured the binding over, known in Mexico’s legal system as “vinculación a proceso.” This step means a judge reviewed the prosecution’s evidence and found sufficient probable cause to move the case to trial. It is a meaningful threshold in Mexico’s adversarial court system, roughly equivalent to an indictment in U.S. courts.

The charge is “homicidio calificado por ventaja,” or premeditated murder with advantage. Under Mexican law, the “advantage” qualifier applies when the attackers held a clear physical or tactical edge over the victim, which can increase the severity of sentencing upon conviction.

Investigation Timeline

The judge set a deadline of June 18, 2026, for prosecutors to complete their complementary investigation. During this period, the FGE’s Specialized Unit for Crimes Against Life will gather additional evidence, interview witnesses, and build the full case file for trial.

Colonia Venustiano Carranza sits in the eastern part of Mexicali, a working-class residential area south of Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas. The daytime shooting on a named avenue in a populated neighborhood drew immediate attention from local authorities.

Mexicali, the capital of Baja California and a border city of roughly one million residents across from Calexico, California, has seen the FGE pursue several high-profile homicide cases through formal judicial channels in recent months. In separate cases reported earlier this year, the office has also filed charges against police officers accused of violent crimes.

Both suspects remain in custody pending further proceedings. No bail has been granted given the severity of the charges.
