A court in Ciudad Constitución sentenced two men to 32 years in prison on June 2 after convicting them of attempted murder against state police officers in Baja California Sur.
Ramón Trinidad and Jesús Manuel opened fire on a marked police vehicle in the early morning hours of August 1, 2025. The patrol car was carrying four officers at the time. The two men fired a combined seven shots before officers subdued and arrested them at the scene. None of the officers were killed.
Court Denies Sentence Reductions
The tribunal denied any sentence reductions or legal benefits for the convicted men. The court also ordered their civil rights suspended for the duration of the sentence and required both to pay damages to the victims.
Ciudad Constitución, a farming town of roughly 45,000 people, sits about 200 kilometers northwest of La Paz along the Transpeninsular Highway (Highway 1). The city serves as the municipal seat of Comondú and is a regular stop for travelers driving between La Paz and Loreto.
Case Handled by High-Impact Crimes Unit
The case was prosecuted through BCS’s high-impact crimes unit, which handles serious offenses including homicide, kidnapping, and armed attacks on security forces. The roughly 10-month timeline from arrest to sentencing is considered relatively fast by Mexican judicial standards, where complex criminal cases can take years to reach a verdict.
The sentencing comes during a period of heightened attention to security across Baja California Sur. Just days earlier, on June 1, an American bystander was killed in a military shootout in San José del Cabo that also injured four other civilians and two soldiers. The BCS State Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation into that incident for aggravated homicide.
The 32-year sentence for attempted murder of police officers is among the stiffer penalties handed down in recent BCS cases. Under Mexican federal and state law, attacks on law enforcement carry enhanced penalties, particularly when firearms are involved.
