Baja California state police and Mexican military forces arrested two armed men linked to a criminal cell in Tecate on Saturday, seizing two loaded firearms and 25 rounds of ammunition during a traffic stop.

Officers from the Fuerza Estatal de Seguridad Ciudadana (FESC), the Mexican Navy, and the Army (SEDENA) pulled over a speeding Nissan Altima in the El Descanso neighborhood. Inside the vehicle, they found Marcelo, 19, originally from Chihuahua, and Javier Arturo, 29, from Tlaxcala. Mexican authorities typically withhold last names during the initial investigation phase.

Suspects Identified as Cartel Cell Operatives

Authorities identified both men as members of a criminal cell responsible for attacking rival groups operating in the Tecate area. The tri-agency operation involved coordination between state and federal security forces, a pattern that has become more common in the border region.

Both suspects were turned over to the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office, which will determine formal charges. Weapons possession tied to organized crime activity carries sentences of up to 15 years under Mexican federal law.

Part of a Broader Security Push in Tecate

The arrest came just two days after the Mexican Army seized 700 kilograms of methamphetamine in the same municipality, one of the largest drug seizures in Tecate in recent months. Taken together, the operations point to intensified security pressure in the small border city, which sits about 35 miles east of Tijuana and serves as a secondary crossing point for travelers heading to and from San Diego County.

Tecate, home to roughly 110,000 residents, has long been a corridor for cartel activity due to its proximity to the U.S. border and its more rural, less patrolled terrain compared to Tijuana. The city’s port of entry sees far less traffic than San Ysidro or Otay Mesa, but its surrounding hills and valleys have made it a strategic zone for drug trafficking and territorial disputes between rival groups.

The El Descanso neighborhood where the stop took place is on the western outskirts of Tecate, along the highway that connects the city to Tijuana and the coastal toll road to Ensenada. Travelers using that route may notice increased military and police checkpoints in the area.
