Baja California state prosecutors recovered two American children in San Felipe after an international Amber Alert traced the minors from Utah to the seaside town on the Sea of Cortez. The children were reunited with their mother on Wednesday after a coordinated operation between Mexican and U.S. law enforcement agencies.

The Baja California State Investigation Agency (AEI) led the rescue under the direction of State Attorney General Ma. Elena Andrade Ramírez. Investigators relied on intelligence shared by the FBI and worked alongside Mexican federal, state, and local security forces to locate the children.

Cross-Border Operation Tracked Children to San Felipe

The two minors had been abducted in Utah and transported across the international border into Baja California. San Felipe, a small fishing and tourism town roughly 120 miles south of the Mexicali border crossing, was where authorities ultimately found them.

The children’s mother traveled to Baja California and crossed through the Mexicali Downtown Port of Entry on Wednesday afternoon to receive her children, according to the state attorney general’s office. After their rescue, the children were placed under the care of the Baja California Attorney General’s Office for medical evaluations before being handed over to their mother.

Amber Alert System Reaches Across Borders

The case is a recent example of the Amber Alert system operating across international lines. The U.S. program, which coordinates with 45 countries worldwide, has helped recover more than 1,312 children as of December 31, 2025, according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s AMBER Alert portal. Mexico maintains its own Alerta Amber program, which works in coordination with the U.S. system.

San Felipe is a popular weekend destination for Americans from Southern California and Arizona, known for its beaches and off-road racing events. The town’s small size and close-knit community may have helped investigators narrow their search quickly.

The Baja California attorney general’s office did not release the names or ages of the children, the identity of the alleged abductor, or details about the circumstances of the abduction. It remains unclear whether any arrests were made in connection with the case.
