Baja California’s state prosecutor’s office has identified the border zone between Tijuana and Tecate as a critical homicide hotspot, according to El Sol de México. The designation points to ongoing cartel violence and territorial disputes in that specific corridor.
The Fiscalía General del Estado, Baja California’s top prosecutorial agency, made the finding as part of its ongoing crime mapping. Officials flagged the zone between the two cities as carrying elevated murder rates tied to organized crime activity. The agency did not release a full breakdown of figures in public statements reviewed for this report.
The Tijuana-Tecate corridor runs roughly 50 kilometers through mountainous terrain east of Tijuana. The route connects two border cities and passes through several peripheral communities with limited police presence. Security analysts have long noted that transitional zones between major urban centers create gaps in law enforcement coverage that criminal groups exploit.
For expats and frequent travelers, the practical concern is transit safety on Federal Highway 2, the main road linking the two cities. If you drive that route regularly for wine country visits, cross-border errands, or commuting, this designation is worth factoring into your travel planning. Daytime travel on major roads remains standard guidance, and avoiding roadside stops in isolated stretches applies here more than ever.
Residents in the outer colonias of both Tijuana and Tecate also fall within the affected zone. Community safety assessments in those neighborhoods may need updating given the prosecutor’s findings.
Baja California has worked to reduce overall homicide numbers in recent years, and the state has deployed combined federal and state security operations in Tijuana’s urban core. However, peripheral corridors have proven harder to saturate with security forces.
The prosecutor’s office has not yet announced a specific enforcement response to the hotspot designation. BDN will report further when officials release additional data or detail a security plan for the corridor.
