Tijuana municipal police seized more than 29 kilograms (about 64 pounds) of marijuana on Tuesday afternoon in the Playas de Tijuana delegation after a local resident tipped them off during a routine patrol.

Officers found seven rectangular packages wrapped in clear plastic strapping on Calle Jazmín, near a stairway roughly 400 meters from the Rancho Las Flores Community Center. The packages were abandoned on the street in the Los Laureles and El Mirador neighborhoods, two residential areas in the hillside section of Playas de Tijuana.

Resident’s Tip Led Officers to the Scene

According to reports, a neighborhood resident flagged down officers during a preventive surveillance patrol Tuesday afternoon. The resident directed them to the exact location of the packages on Calle Jazmín.

When officers opened the bundles, they found dried green plant material consistent with marijuana. Official weighing confirmed the total at 29 kilograms and 330 grams. No suspects were present at the scene, and no arrests were made.

Drugs Turned Over to Federal Prosecutors

After securing the drugs, officers filed a standardized police report known as an Informe Policial Homologado (IPH). They then turned the seized marijuana over to the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office, which handles drug cases classified as federal health crimes.

The Playas de Tijuana delegation, a coastal district popular with both Mexican families and American visitors, sits just south of the border fence at the Pacific Ocean. The area has long been a known transit corridor for drug shipments. Past seizures in the delegation have included loads of 100 kilograms or more of marijuana found on dirt roads and near the coastline.

Police did not speculate on who may have abandoned the packages or whether the drugs were intended for transport across the border into the United States. The investigation remains open with federal prosecutors.
