Tijuana municipal police arrested an armed motorcyclist Tuesday morning in the Granjas Familiares neighborhood after a .38 Special revolver fell from his possession during a routine patrol on Calle Potrero. Officers turned the 36-year-old suspect over to federal prosecutors for illegal weapons charges.

Revolver Dropped During Patrol Stop on Calle Potrero

The man, identified as Charly Javier, told officers he was originally from the state of Jalisco and worked as a mechanic. He was riding an older model Kawasaki motorcycle bearing California license plates when police stopped him.

Granjas Familiares sits in the eastern portion of Tijuana, a largely residential zone of modest homes and small workshops. Calle Potrero runs near several auto repair shops, which aligns with the suspect’s claimed profession. The source report notes the arrest took place in front of a “calafia” bus repair shop, a reference to the private minibuses that serve as public transit across Tijuana.

Federal Firearms Charges Expected

Because Mexico’s firearms laws fall under federal jurisdiction, local police transferred Charly Javier to the FGR (Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office) rather than processing the case at the municipal level. Possession of a firearm without a federal permit carries sentences of up to 15 years in Mexican courts, depending on the weapon’s caliber and whether the suspect has prior offenses.

Tijuana’s municipal police force has carried out regular patrols in residential neighborhoods as part of the city’s public safety strategy. The city recorded more than 1,400 homicides in 2024, making street-level weapons enforcement a priority for local commanders. Illegal firearms frequently cross south from the United States into Baja California, and the California plates on the suspect’s motorcycle will likely draw scrutiny from federal investigators.

The arrest was a straightforward stop with no shots fired and no injuries reported. Charly Javier now faces federal proceedings in Tijuana, according to Punto Norte.
