A sergeant and two agents from Mexico’s National Guard have been formally charged for an armed robbery and assault against a surgeon couple in Tijuana’s upscale Chapultepec neighborhood. The February 3 break-in was confirmed publicly on May 28 by Baja California Public Security Secretary Laureano Carrillo Rodríguez at Governor Marina del Pilar’s weekly press conference.

The three officers arrived at the doctors’ home in official patrol vehicles while wearing their uniforms, according to the case details. They forced their way into the residence, physically beat the couple, and briefly detained them inside their own house. The officers stole luxury watches, designer handbags, and thousands of dollars and pesos in cash before fleeing.

Security Cameras Captured the Attack

Home security cameras recorded the robbery on video. Authorities have acknowledged that the footage shows more individuals participating in the crime than the three who have been charged so far. That detail means the investigation remains open, with possible additional arrests pending.

Because the suspects are federal personnel, the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR, Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office) is leading the criminal investigation. The National Guard is conducting a separate internal proceeding under its own military code of justice. The charges are moving through the military court system rather than civilian courts.

A Pattern of Robberies Targeting Doctors

The February 3 incident was not isolated. Punto Norte reported at least three similar robberies carried out by individuals in National Guard uniforms targeting Tijuana doctors during early February 2026. Earlier reporting by Baja News described armed suspects “posing as federal authorities” breaking into a home in the same Chapultepec neighborhood. In that account, the robbery ended only when a private alarm company responded and neighbors began gathering outside, causing the suspects to flee.

Chapultepec is one of Tijuana’s most established residential areas, located east of downtown near Avenida Hipódromo. The neighborhood is home to many medical professionals who operate private practices and clinics in the surrounding area. Its relatively affluent character appears to have made local doctors targets.

Military Courts Raise Accountability Questions

The decision to prosecute through military rather than civilian courts is standard procedure when active-duty federal personnel face charges. However, military proceedings in Mexico operate with limited public transparency compared to civilian trials. Victims and observers typically have less access to case files and hearing schedules.

Carrillo Rodríguez confirmed that both the federal criminal case and the military internal proceeding are moving forward simultaneously. No timeline for trial has been announced. The case was first reported by Punto Norte.
