A taxi struck two elderly foreign tourists Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Melchor Ocampo and Paseo de la Marina in downtown Cabo San Lucas, leaving one man in critical condition. Blue Net paramedics transported the male victim to a private hospital, while the female victim received medical attention at the scene.

Witnesses identified a white vehicle with a damaged windshield as the taxi involved in the collision. The intersection sits in the heart of the port’s commercial and tourist district, just blocks from the Cabo San Lucas marina where cruise passengers disembark daily.

The nationalities and identities of the two victims have not been released. Authorities opened an investigation to determine responsibility for the crash, but no details about the driver or potential charges have been made public as of Tuesday evening.

The Melchor Ocampo and Paseo de la Marina crossing is one of the most heavily trafficked pedestrian intersections in Cabo San Lucas. The area draws foot traffic from the marina boardwalk, nearby restaurants, and shops that cater to cruise ship day visitors and resort guests alike.

Pedestrian Safety at a High-Traffic Crossing

Pedestrian accidents in Cabo San Lucas’s downtown core remain an ongoing concern. The area around Paseo de la Marina sees constant vehicle traffic from taxis, tour buses, and private shuttles competing for road space on narrow streets originally designed for far less volume. Los Cabos has been investing in new video surveillance infrastructure for the downtown area and El Médano Beach in 2026, but crosswalk infrastructure and traffic calming measures have not kept pace with the city’s growth.

Cabo San Lucas has also faced broader transportation tensions this year. In early May, a 10-hour blockade by transport operators paralyzed the city’s main highway, and disputes between taxi unions and state regulators have intensified. The taxi sector in Los Cabos operates alongside a growing number of unregulated vehicles, creating a chaotic street-level environment for both drivers and pedestrians.

Authorities have not announced a timeline for completing their investigation into Tuesday’s crash. This story was first reported by Colectivo Pericú.
