Emergency crews from at least five agencies responded Wednesday afternoon to a suspicious package found on Calle General Emiliano Zapata in Tijuana’s Jardines del Rubí neighborhood. The object, left in a box on a public street, contained what appeared to be electronic components and solar panels, prompting authorities to treat it as a potential explosive device.

Multiple Agencies Cordon Off the Area

Firefighters, municipal police, Protección Civil (Civil Protection), the National Guard, and the Mexican Army all deployed to the scene. Authorities cordoned off the surrounding streets while investigators worked to determine whether the device posed a genuine threat.

As of the original report’s publication, officials had not confirmed whether the object was an actual explosive or a harmless collection of electronics. The multi-agency response follows standard protocol for suspected improvised explosive devices in Tijuana.

Heightened Tensions After Drone Attack on Prosecutor’s Office

The suspicious package discovery comes during a tense period for Tijuana’s security landscape. Just this week, a drone attack struck the Baja California state attorney general’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Playas de Tijuana on Wednesday evening. State Attorney General María Elena Andrade Ramírez confirmed that attackers used three drones carrying improvised explosive devices made from plastic bottles filled with gunpowder, nails, ball bearings, and metal fragments.

That attack damaged part of the building and six vehicles but caused no injuries. The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana issued a security alert urging American citizens to avoid areas with police presence and to monitor local media. Andrade’s office has opened an investigation classified under the legal category of terrorism.

What Residents Should Know

Jardines del Rubí sits in Tijuana’s eastern sprawl, away from the main tourist corridors near the border crossing and Zona Río. Still, road closures and police activity in the area could affect traffic patterns for those commuting through the neighborhood.

Improvised devices have occasionally been used in cartel-related intimidation in Tijuana, a major hub for cross-border drug trafficking. Cartels and criminal organizations in Mexico have increasingly turned to drones and explosive devices in attacks against rivals and authorities in recent years.
