An armed attack Wednesday evening in Playas de Rosarito left one person dead and another injured, according to local reports. Gunfire broke out at approximately 6:51 p.m. on Calle De la Misión in the Huacatay neighborhood, prompting a rapid response from security forces.
Authorities arrived shortly after the shooting was reported. The identity of the deceased and the condition of the wounded person have not been publicly released. No suspects have been named, and no motive has been confirmed.
Location and Context
The Huacatay neighborhood sits in a residential area of Rosarito, a coastal city located roughly 20 miles south of the U.S. border and about 15 miles south of downtown Tijuana along the toll road. Rosarito is popular with American and Canadian expats, weekend visitors from Southern California, and retirees drawn to its beachfront condos and lower cost of living.
The shooting follows a pattern of armed incidents in Rosarito in recent months. In late July 2025, two gunmen ambushed a Rosarito police officer outside his home, wounding him as he returned from his shift. That attack also took place during evening hours.
Ongoing Security Concerns
Rosarito’s municipal police force has long been considered understaffed relative to the city’s security challenges. The city has roughly 120,000 residents, with population swelling during tourist season and holiday weekends. Armed confrontations in Baja California have periodically spilled into residential areas, particularly during evening and nighttime hours.
Wednesday’s attack on Calle De la Misión occurred while daylight was still fading, a time when foot and vehicle traffic remains common in residential neighborhoods. No bystander injuries were reported.
State and municipal authorities have not released further details about the investigation. It remains unclear whether the attack was targeted or random.
