Baja California’s Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the state attorney general’s office, deployed search brigades to San Felipe on April 11 to look for six missing individuals. Teams conducted foot patrols across desert terrain and rural roads surrounding the Sea of Cortez port town, located roughly 120 miles south of the U.S. border at Mexicali.

The six people being sought are Freddy Álvarez Miranda, Ingrid Sherlyn Esponda Cabrera, Issac Sosa Díaz, Sebastián Asencio Galaviz, Javier Manuel Domínguez López, and Jesús Guadalupe Becerra Ruiz. No details about when or under what circumstances each person went missing were released by authorities.

National Guard, Navy Join the Search

The FGE search teams were backed by members of Mexico’s National Guard and the Mexican Navy (SEMAR). Crews fanned out on foot across the arid landscape surrounding San Felipe, mapping desert terrain and unpaved rural roads in the region. The area east of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir is sparsely populated, with long stretches of open desert between small settlements.

In the town itself, teams posted missing-person flyers throughout San Felipe’s city center and surrounding neighborhoods. The flyer campaign aims to encourage residents and visitors to come forward with any information about the six individuals.

Missing Persons Crisis Across Baja California

San Felipe, a small fishing and tourist town popular with American RV travelers and weekend visitors from the Imperial Valley and Arizona, has a permanent population of roughly 25,000. The town sits on the western shore of the upper Sea of Cortez and is known for its dramatic tidal flats and desert scenery.

Baja California has struggled for years with a high number of disappearances. Volunteer search collectives, often led by mothers of the missing, regularly conduct independent searches across the state. The FGE’s organized brigade operations represent the government’s formal response to mounting pressure from families and advocacy groups demanding action.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the six missing individuals to contact the FGE directly. Tips can be submitted through the attorney general’s office or local law enforcement in San Felipe.
