A court in Baja California Sur sentenced a man identified as Rigoberto “N” to 14 years and six months in prison for sexual abuse of a minor in Santa Rosalía. The defendant admitted guilt to charges of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual abuse with violence through an expedited legal procedure.
Abuse Occurred Twice in Guerrero Neighborhood
The crimes took place on two occasions at a home in the Guerrero neighborhood of Santa Rosalía, a small mining town on the Gulf of California coast about 350 miles south of the U.S. border. The first incident occurred on September 12, 2023, and the second on December 19, 2024, more than 15 months later.
The PGJE (Baja California Sur’s state attorney general’s office) prosecuted the case after the defendant acknowledged responsibility for both offenses. Mexican law permits an abbreviated trial procedure when the accused admits guilt, which can speed the path to sentencing and spare victims from extended courtroom proceedings.
Court Orders Therapy and Financial Restitution
Beyond the prison sentence, the court ordered Rigoberto “N” to pay for the victim’s psychological therapy. He was also fined the equivalent of 151 days of wages as restitution. Mexican courts commonly impose therapy payments in cases involving minors to address long-term harm.
The gap between the two offenses is notable. The first assault in September 2023 went unreported for over a year before the second took place in December 2024. Under Mexican federal and state law, sexual crimes against minors carry enhanced penalties, and the “aggravated” classification in this case reflects the use of violence and the victim’s age.
Santa Rosalía, the seat of the Mulegé municipality, has a population of roughly 14,000. The town is best known for its French colonial heritage, the metal church designed by Gustave Eiffel’s workshop, and its role as a ferry port connecting Baja to mainland Mexico via Guaymas, Sonora.
The PGJE stated it will continue to pursue prosecutions in sexual crimes involving minors across the state, according to Colectivo Pericú.
