San José del Cabo’s fire department handled 110 emergency calls during Holy Week 2026, a 23% increase over the 89 calls logged during the same holiday period in 2025. The spike, driven largely by a surge in paramedic responses, came as thousands of visitors packed the Los Cabos corridor and East Cape beaches from March 30 through April 5.

Of the 110 calls, 74 were paramedic responses, up from 57 during Holy Week 2025, a 30% jump. The remaining 36 calls involved fire and rescue incidents. Despite the higher volume, officials reported zero fatalities during the week.

All Four Stations Ran Around the Clock

Department commander Omar Barreras Núñez said all four active fire stations in the San José del Cabo district operated 24 hours a day throughout the holiday. The department deployed 25 additional personnel, a mix of active firefighters and volunteers, to form special brigades at coastal checkpoints.

Those checkpoints were stationed at La Fortuna, Los Frailes, La Ribera, and Santiago. These communities sit along the East Cape corridor between San José del Cabo and the tip of the peninsula’s eastern coastline, areas popular with both local vacationers and foreign residents during Semana Santa.

Paramedic Calls Drove the Surge

The year-over-year data shows paramedic calls accounted for most of the increase. In 2025, paramedic responses made up about 64% of Holy Week calls. In 2026, that share rose to 67%. Fire and rescue incidents held relatively steady, edging up from 32 in 2025 to 36 this year.

Barreras Núñez called on the broader community to improve prevention awareness. He said reducing accidents during peak vacation periods would ease the growing strain on emergency services, particularly as visitor numbers continue to climb in the Los Cabos municipality.

Holy Week is one of the busiest travel periods of the year in Baja California Sur. Beaches, campgrounds, and hotels across the region fill to capacity as Mexican families travel south and international visitors extend spring trips.

The Los Cabos municipal government published the emergency response figures on its official website.
