State and federal officers arrested a 25-year-old Tijuana man on Monday afternoon after a vehicle pursuit ended with the seizure of more than 44 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine on Insurgentes Avenue in the Río Tijuana Tercera Etapa neighborhood.
The suspect, identified as José de Jesús, was driving a gray Honda Odyssey when officers attempted to stop him. He abruptly halted the vehicle and tried to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by a joint team from the Fuerza Estatal de Seguridad Ciudadana (FESC, Baja California’s state police) and federal agents.
100 Packets Found Behind Front Seats
Officers searched the Odyssey and found two black bags stashed behind the front seats. Inside were 100 individually wrapped packets of crystal meth totaling more than 44 kilos, roughly 97 pounds. At recent wholesale estimates for methamphetamine in the border region, the haul could carry a street value in the hundreds of thousands of dollars once moved north.
Authorities transferred the case to the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office, which handles drug trafficking prosecutions. Investigators said José de Jesús is linked to an active drug trafficking cell operating in the Tijuana area, though officials did not name the specific organization.
A Major Urban Corridor
The Río Tijuana Tercera Etapa neighborhood sits along the canalized Tijuana River and borders several major transit routes used by cross-border commuters heading to and from the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry. Insurgentes Avenue is one of the city’s primary north-south arteries, carrying heavy daily traffic through commercial and residential areas.
The bust is one of several significant meth seizures in the Tijuana corridor in recent months. In April, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa port seized 307 pounds of methamphetamine from a single vehicle, valued at roughly $491,200. In March, another Tijuana resident was arrested at the border with approximately 429 kilograms of liquid meth hidden in a commercial truck’s fuel tank.
Joint Operations Continue in Baja California
Monday’s arrest is part of an ongoing pattern of coordinated state and federal security operations across Baja California. FESC units and federal forces have conducted joint patrols and interdiction operations with increasing frequency in Tijuana’s urban neighborhoods, targeting drug transport routes that run through populated areas rather than remote corridors.
The 44-kilo seizure is notable for its size in a single vehicle stop on a city street. José de Jesús remains in federal custody pending formal charges.
The arrest was first reported by Punto Norte.
